Welcome to Stitches for Charity

Stitching hope and healing for children in need, one thread at a time

About

Our Mission

Children admitted to the hospital experience anxiety and depression, which can trigger stress hormones that hinder healing; leading to pain intensification, slower recovery times, increased complications, and longer hospital stays. Positive mental states can boost immune function and promote better health outcomes. Stitches for Charity strives to improve patient outcomes by helping to treat the mental health of children through in-kind donations of kid-themed blankets, pillowcases, toys and games, books, and arts and crafts.

We also fundraise to provide grants to cover medical bills for families with children in the hospital who are unable to afford their medical bills. Every year, even Americans with health insurance declare bankruptcy because they are unable to afford the deductibles and copays of their medical bills. Our mission is to ensure every child in the greater Detroit area has the financial resources to receive the medical care they need.

Executive Leadership

Robert Canman - President and Founder

Robert Canman is currently a sophomore at Rochester Adams High School. When Robert was a baby until he was about 5 years old, Robert was regularly admitted to the hospital due to severe asthma. During his hospital stays, he remembers a nonprofit organization in the Chicago area, where he lived at the time, regularly brining in gifts of homemade baby blankets and quilts, Christmas ornaments, kid themed pillow cases, and other decorative items for his room. He still has those gifts today because they remind him of how special it was to have the community show they cared. It lifted his spirits for not just the time he was in the hospital, but also after he was out. Those gifts also showed him the value of community service and giving back. In that spirit, Robert founded Stitches for Charity to improve the lives of children in the greater Detroit area.
